Kids sun hats instructions

childs dashwood fabric sun hat

Children’s sun hat’s are summer essentials and I’ve always found I settle for whatever I can find in the shops, the first day the sun comes out!

This is a great pattern that can be made up quickly using just 2 fat quarters and some interfacing. You can use the fabric you choose or even something your kids like to encourage them to keep it on their head!

The pattern is quite straight forward to make up but there are a lot of curves to sew, so be sure to use your seam allowance for accuracy. Ironing as you go also helps.

We have the pattern for sale in the shop for £4.00 this includes the flat paper pattern and the interfacing you will need for the hat. The patterns come in 3 sizes and range from 6months – 4 years old.

The instructions are as follows and any questions please send us an email and we can explain further. Brighton sewing centre contact details

childs hat step 11. The first step is to cut out all your pieces and stitch the seam in the band – make sure you have the right sides of your fabric together.

2. Stay stitch the upper and lower edges of the band, by machine stitching approx 8mm fro the raw edges. Then clip to stitching.

childs hat step 33. With right sides together, stitch band to crown, matching notches and centre front seam to CB.

childs hat step 55. Pin brim sections together and stitch along untouched edge. Clip curves.

childs hat step 66. Turn brim to the right sides. Press. Baste raw edges together.

childs hat step 77. For hat lining, repeat steps 1 and 2. Then step 3. When stitching around the band at the crown, leave an opening for turning the hat through at the end.

childs hat step 88. Pin brim to band and stitch down.

childs hat step 99. With right sides together, pin lining to hat (over brim), stitch 1cm from raw edges.

childs hat step 1010. Turn to right sides. Press. Slip stitch opening edges together!

  1. You don’t mention where the interfacing goes. Do you use it for all 3 sections, top, band and brim?

    1. Hi Petra, Yes the inferfacing goes on all 3 sections of one half of the hat, so the other half is just fabric. Hope this makes sense! 😀
